Birth must be declared within 15 days of the delivery, either by a delegate of the maternity ward (art. 56§1 al. 2 CC) or by a person who witnessed the delivery (art. 56 § 2 al. 2 CC).
The birth certificate states:
- the date, time, and place of birth, the first and last names of the child, and the sex of the child;
- the year, the date, and the place of birth, the first and last names and legal residence of the mother and the father, if paternity is established;
- the first and last names and legal residence of the declaring party (art. 57 CC).
Recognition
Recognition can be done before, during, or after the establishment of the birth certificate.
