Citizenship

The Code of Citizenship was introduced by the law of June 28, 1984 and entered into vigor on January 1, 1985.
It is based on citizenship by blood, in which citizenship by birth occupies a central place.
Attribution, acquisition, loss, and recuperation of Belgian citizenship only have an effect on the future (art. 2).
Parental relationships only have an automatic effect in the matter of citizenship if they are established before the child reaches 18 years of age, or in the case of legal emancipation, before the child is legally emancipated (art. 3).
Belgian citizenship may be proved by establishing the existence of conditions and formalities required by Belgian law.
Different procedures for application are to be studied on a case-by-case basis!
