Animal slaughter

Private slaughter

What is a declaration of slaughter for private use?

  • A declaration of slaughter for private use is a recorded declaration of a person by which he or she states the intention of slaughtering an animal or of having an animal slaughtered (the animal’s meat will be destined exclusively for the private use of owner and for his or her family)
  • This declaration must be made at the slaughterhouse for all animals that are slaughtered there and at the municipal offices for all animals that are slaughtered outside of the slaughterhouse.

For which animals can the municipality record a declaration of private slaughter?

  • The municipality can only record a declaration of private slaughter for pigs, sheep, goats, and deer if they are slaughtered outside of the slaughterhouse
  • Seeing as cattle and calves can no longer be slaughtered in any place but the slaughterhouse, the municipality cannot record a declaration of slaughter for these animals
  • For the private slaughter of poultry, rabbits, and wild game outside of the slaughterhouse, a declaration of slaughter is not required. For slaughters in the slaughterhouse, however, the owner/declaring party must be recorded in advance.

Where and when must a declaration of slaughter for private use be made?

  • For a declaration of slaughter for private use that is carried out at the slaughterhouse, at time of the animal’s arrival.
  • A declaration of private slaughter that is carried out outside of the slaughterhouse takes place in the municipal offices no less than 2 business days in advance and no more than 10 business days in advance.
